Finally, it feels like the end of summer has come. In one week in Texas, we have experienced 3 different seasons: summer, fall, then summer again, and now winter. Don’t worry though, summer isn’t completely gone, and we have at least 3 days of fall left somewhere.
When the weather stays the same, we tend not to have as many problems with our vehicles. The problems we’ve had, we’ve already fixed. However, when it does change, we can experience new issues. Use the tips below to help make sure your car is ready no matter what the season is.
- Tires – Worn tires are dangerous at any time, especially in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month, letting the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure.
- Belts – Make sure belts (mostly belt nowadays) are in good shape. Belts contract and expand as well and with weather changes. Have your belt inspected the next time you have an oil change.
- Washer Fluid – Yes, water can be used for washer fluid, but you are probably better off buying actual washer fluid. Formulated to remove grime and bugs, windshield washer fluid is a mixture of solvent, detergent and antifreeze agents. It keeps the components of the washer system running longer.
- Oil Change – Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual – more often if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.
- Windshield wipers – If you can’t see, you can’t drive. Make sure the windshield wipers work well and aren’t worn out.
- Radiator – The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended by the manufacturer. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended.
- Heater/Defroster – The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.
