One of the most complex and essential parts of your car is your transmission. Due to their complexity, constant use and function within a vehicle’s operation, automatic and manual transmissions experience a lot of wear and tear. If car owners don’t check and change the fluid regularly, it can lead to extensive problems down the road.
Automatic transmissions are responsible for shifting gears without driver input to change gear ratios efficiently as the vehicle moves forward, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. This reduces the amount of work required from a driver but also adds complexity to the transmission itself.
Before automatic transmissions, manual transmissions ruled supreme. From 3 on-the-tree to 4 on-the-floor, calve muscles rejoiced for the average motorist when automatic transmissions hit the mainstream market. No longer were drivers required to depress the clutch pedal and manually change gears. Now, letters replaced gear indicators. Instead of 1-4 or more, we have D for Drive unless your dad was one of the ones who said D was for drag and R was for Race. The poor soul who believed R was for Race was in for quite a shock.
With manual transmissions, the home mechanic could change out a clutch in his garage if it went out but that’s not the case for automatics. Automatic transmissions require a special set of skill and experience to properly fix.
